The Mira Costa Comedysportz team competed against Redondo Union High School on Dec. 3 and won the match 25-23.
The match was holiday themed and Costa competed as the Christmas team versus Redondo, the Hanukah themed team. The winner of the match was determined through the amount of applause the audience gave to each team.
“Our holiday match was extremely successful and overall one of the best matches we have had,” Comedysportz member sophomore Jack Drinker said. “The people who competed in the match did an amazing job.”
During the first half of the match, players were introduced with different holiday themed puns as their names. Costa won one of the two matches, and by the end of the first half, they were losing with a score of 10-1.
“The first half was an excellent blend of hilarity and talent,” Comedysportz senior president Miranda Baldo said. “Duncan Bardeau was captain of the team and led flawlessly in each game the team played.”
Costa’s Comedysportz team beat Redondo in the second half, leading to their victory. In the first game of the half. Costa gained more applause than Redondo, helping them gain the advantage. After playing the final game of the night, Christmas Party, Costa won the entire match by two points.
“Not only did the members play two very complex and difficult games, but they executed them masterfully,” Baldo said. “The team all had great chemistry and the talent they possessed onstage was pure and amazing.”
To prepare for upcoming matches, the Comedysportz team practices twice a week at team members’ houses. At practices, team members play skits and games similar to ones at matches. The Comedysportz president and seniors then critique the members performances and give them suggestions that could help them in an actual competition.
“The practices help us go over the games that we are playing in matches and give us a chance to help each other if someone is struggling with something so that each game can be perfected,” Drinker said.
The Comedysportz team will hold their next match on Jan. 21. In this match, new team members who joined this year will get their first chance to play and compete against another school for the first time.
“In our next match, our new players get to compete and showcase how much they have learned so it will be really exciting to see what they bring to the game ,” Baldo said.
