After suffering a heartbreaking quarter final 1-0 loss to Harvard Westlake in the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, the Mustangs will be back for redemption this year with a roster consisting of many new, young players.

This season, the girls soccer team has a completly new roster. In this past offseason, the team has added a total of 12 new players, aiming to replace lost players from last year. According to newest player, sophomore defender Genevieve Watkins, the team has been playing very competitive and should be successful this year if they can keep it up.

“It has been super fun playing on this team, especially as a sophomore,” Watkins said. “I have made a lot of new friends and have learned a lot from the upperclassman. I enjoy the competitiveness on varsity because the games are much more intense.

The team is going to be missing two important players from last year’s roster, their goalkeeper Nonie Frishette, was a very consistent player who could easily make the important game changing saves and who is now attending Wake Forest for soccer. Their other loss was their forward and leading scorer Makenna Doyle.

“We have lost some very good players last year to Division 1 soccer but I am glad that we have been doing well so far,” said coach Patty Perkinson. “We are excited to have the whole varsity squad. The whole soccer coaching staff is really excited to start a new season since it’s always new and exciting!”

This year two standouts on the Mustang side are senior midfielder Hanna Watkins who is currently committed to the University of Chicago and junior midfielder Viviana Villacorta. Each of the players have been on the team for a couple of years and have helped the Mustangs each year with their ability to be able to be playmakers in the middle of the field

“I think this year will be great!” Watkins said. “We have a team full of new players, so we are going to have to devote a lot of time to working on our chemistry, but fortunately, we have a lot of skill and a lot of passion and I can’t wait!”

This season, according to coach Perkinson, the team has been playing well as a team and adjusting to the new players in their system, and as log as the the team can continue what they have been doing these past couple of games, they have the potential to play very well.

“I think our team has great chemistry and have recently been performing well,” Perkinson said. “I’m hoping that with all of our skills and performance level that the girls have heart whenever they step on the field since I believe that this be an important factor for us!”
