Mira Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated by rival Redondo Union High School Thursday 44-40 at home in the team’s final Bay League game of the season. Despite their loss, the Mustangs received a standout performance from senior guard Halle Maeda who kept Costa’s score up with her excellent three point shooting.
Right from the beginning, the Mustangs fought to keep their lead. In the first half, Costa played great defense, allowing them to gain a one point lead. With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Costa lead by six points. However, rapid scoring from the Seahawks allowed them to take over the lead, finishing the game 44-40.
“Even though we lost, our team really hustled to get the ball and executed some of our offensive plays to get easy shots,” junior forward Mia Finney said.
The Mustangs finished 8-2 in Bay League with an 18-8 overall record, sending them off to California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoffs. The fifth ranked team will play its first round against a team that’s undetermined at this time. According to Finney, Costa will have to work on in-game communication in order to be successful.
“We are going to have to work on communication and trusting each other on the floor in order to win in CIF,” Finney said
