The Seth sisters are making a splash.

Manhattan Beach Middle School eighth grader Megan Seth and Costa junior Emily Seth both received a surfing sponsorship from Auctiv and Spyder Surfboards beginning six months ago.

“I was very excited when I got sponsored because I knew that it would push me to work harder and progress in this sport,” Emily Seth said. “Getting sponsored has always been a goal of mine and I am very happy to be representing these brands.”

When the girls were three years old, their father Tom Seth would go out and push them into the waves. They did not start surfing competitively until they attended MBMS where they were fired up to surf. According to Emily, she met new friends at MBMS that also loved to surf, and that really motivated her.

“My dad is an inspiration to me because he has always kept his passion for the ocean and surfing alive, and he is still so excited every time a good swell hits,” Seth said. “He has kept his love for the ocean for over 30 years, and I hope to do the same.”

Emily is currently on the Mira Costa Surf Team, and practices everyday to keep continuing her passion. Megan will be an incoming freshman and is practicing everyday so that she also can be on the surf team for all four of her high school years.

“I hope that they accomplish whatever goals they set for themselves, whether it’s becoming a professional surfer or just making it a lifelong hobby,” Tom Seth said.

Since they started becoming more serious about surfing, the girls have entered many competitions. Megan is currently doing surf PE at MBMS, and has placed in the top five of every competition she has participated in. She also won the South Bay Boardriders Championship last year.

“Competing can be a little overwhelming sometimes, but I haven’t done many serious competitions yet,” Megan Seth said. “I still love participating in contests though because it’s really exciting and fun, especially when I place high.”

Emily has competed in many of the same competitions, and won the Kickoff Classic last year for short board. According to Emily Seth, competitions are fun because she gets to go out and compete against other people while doing the sport she loves.

“I enjoy competing in surf competitions because it gives me something to work towards and it’s fun to be in a competitive environment with people that share my passions,” Emily Seth said.

As for the future, both Emily and Megan hope to continue surfing throughout college and for the rest of their lives. Their love for the ocean and surfing keeps them practicing everyday, no matter what size waves there are.

“I definitely see myself surfing in college and I know that it is a sport I will continue to love and participate in for the rest of my life,” Seth said.
