Mira Costa’s softball team played its fourth game of the season against Santa Fe High School on Saturday at the second weekend of the Cypress Tournament. The Mustangs lost 5-2 and extended their losing streak to four games.
The Mustangs had the lead until the fourth inning, when they lost control and conceded three runs. The lead was too much for Costa, and with an extra run tacked on in the sixth inning by Santa Fe, the game was sealed. According to third baseman Grace Herron, the team was unable to recover after it fell behind.
“Even though we were batting well, we couldn’t fit together the pieces,” Herron said, “we couldn’t get the runs in that we needed to make up the deficit.”
The Mustangs, now 0-4 overall, will next play El Segundo at El Segundo High School on Wednesday in a non-conference game. According to Herron, the team is focusing on outfield and situational plays.
“We are practicing throwing the ball to the correct cut-off position and knowing our surroundings so we can hold a lead once we obtain it,” Herron said.
