Mira Costa’s boys lacrosse team defeated El Segundo 12-5 at El Segundo High School on Wednesday to extend Costa’s winning streak to four. Many underclassmen such as sophomores Zach Horowitz and Macallan Laver stepped up to lead the Mustangs to victory.
Costa maintained a big lead throughout the game, ending the first quarter 3-0 but allowed El Segundo to almost catch up in the second quarter to end the first half 4-3. In the second half, the Mustangs went out strong and stayed strong to bring home the win. According to Horwitz, despite the win, the team could have done better.
“In the first half we were kind of out of it because we weren’t used to playing in early games,” Horowitz said. “It was pretty hard yesterday, but by the first half we snapped out of it and our man-up play got a lot better, which got us a lot of goals.”
Costa, now 4-1 overall, will travel to Oak Park on Friday to play a non-conference game against Oak Park at 7 p.m. According to Horowitz, the team needs to work on getting the ball around quicker and dodging into the goal to prepare for its next game.
It’s going to be a close game,” Horowitz said. “We’ve practiced a lot, so I think we should come home with a win.”
