Mira Costa students and parents participated in the 26th annual Pride Day event on March 5 in an effort to clean and beautify the campus by picking weeds, planting plants and picking up trash around the campus.
Over 140 students and 15 adults attended the event. Pride Day has been an annual event at Costa since 1990, and the event has seen outstanding participation and effort since the founding year, Associated Student Body head of Pride Day and junior Mary Clyde Bisset said. Pride Day has motivated all students to inherit a sense of pride and appreciation for the well-being of the Costa campus, ASB director Lisa Claypoole said.
“Pride Day had a great turn out and I was very impressed with everyone’s capability to work together to help our school,” Bisset said.
Pride Day is a part of the Campus Clean Up Campaign in which members of ASB and the Parent Teacher Student Association work together to improve the environment of Costa for the students and staff. Each year, students from Costa clubs and organizations including Science Olympiad, Mustangs 4 Change and Reading Partners Club participate in the event.
“Pride Day is beneficial to the students and the school because it encourages students to appreciate the campus more and to create a better, cleaner environment,” ASB sophomore president Keeli Hartley said. “It also creates a more positive environment for students to learn in.”
Pride Day formerly took place twice a year at Costa, but has changed since 1990 to only once a year. Once taking place in the Fall and the Spring, scheduling conflicts with Homecoming has required Pride Day to be limited to only once a year.
“It was really nice seeing so many people come together to work together to help the school and to get the job done,” Bisset said. “Costa is a great school and there’s a sense of pride that comes along with everyone working together to make the campus a better place.”
