Mira Costa’s boys junior varsity tennis team swept Inglewood’s varsity team in an 18-0 away league game on Tuesday.

The Mustangsdecided to give its varsity team a rest and allowed the junior varsity team to step up. The Inglewood team is full of beginners, and playing against the Sentinels gave Costa’s JV players an opportunity to get experience playing for  a varsity team.

“We tried to make the game enjoyable for Inglewood by keeping rallies going and focusing more on sportsmanship and less on winning,” sophomore Ben Choromanski said.

The Mustangs won all of their doubles sets. Doubles teams Choromanski and sophomore Jonathan Scalabrini, freshman Ethan Han and sophomore Charlie Fitzgerald and freshman Nick Darrow and sophomore Chris Lee each won their matches, 6-0, respectively.

“I think this match was beneficial because I improved my consistency, and I got to experience playing in a varsity match,” Darrow said.

The wins in singles from freshman Alex Fry, junior Sammy Buchta and sophomore Max Glasman, 6-0, 6-3 and 6-0, respectively, contributed to the team’s overall victory.

“Before the game, our coach told us to play with consistency, and we did just that and we won all our matches,” Buchta said. “Joe also said to make sure that the kids on Inglewood do not get discouraged and want to keep on playing  tennis.”

The Mustangs are currently 16-2 overall and 7-1 in Bay League. JV filled in for varsity and  played an away game at Morningside yesterday; however, results were unavailable at the time of publication. The Mustangs were  expecting Morningside’s team to play a lot like Inglewood’s, Darrow said prior to the match.

“The team needs to work on our consistency before the Morningside match,” Darrow said. “This will help us so that we don’t miss as many shots and can win more of the matches.”
