Two Manhattan Beach Middle School students were caught intoxicated and under the influence of Marijuana on campus on two separate incidents, respectfully on April 13 and April 20.
MBMS called an ambulance to assist a male MBMS student found by teachers to be under while under influence and with possession of alcohol on March 13. An unrelated incident occurred on March 20 when a female MBMS student was found with Marijuana edibles.
“I don’t think these situations are all that much different from what it’s always been in middle school and high school,” MBMS Principal John Jackson said. “ However, with the internet and social media it makes situations like this more discussed amongst the community which is unfortunate.”
Both students face suspension and will enter the juvenile diversion program, a program that sets out a plan that includes community service and educational classes to prevent underage drinking and drug usage. The suspensions will remain on the student’s permant records.
“Some parents think the punishments are too harsh and others think they are too lenient,” “However, we try to make this a learning experience. Their lives are not over, it’s just that they made a mistake.”
According to Jackson, MBMS has finished their investigation of the situations last week and has a solid sense of what is going on in each case. In reaction to the two incidents, MBMS has scheduled drug dog visits and plans on hosting parent nights to inform families on the situations.
“We want to start doing some things earlier in the year to educate kids and parents about the dangers of substances,” Jackson said. “Hopefully, this will help prevent situations like this as much as possible.”
