Mira Costa’s girls beach volleyball team competed in the IBVL Pairs Championship invitational tournament on Saturday at Dockweiler Beach. Senior Emma Smith and her partner Piper Monk-Heidrich delivered a standout performance placing first overall.

Costa’s second and third seed teams composed of partners junior Rio Frohoff and senior Avery Hazelrigg, and juniors Maddie Micheletti and Alexia Inman tied for fifth overall. According to Micheletti, the Mustangs’ strong setting ability allowed them to score easier in close games.

“I think we communicated pretty well and we were setting each other very consistently, which helped us put the ball away more easily,” Micheletti said.

The 10-0 Mustangs will next take on Ventura High School Tuesday at Annenberg Beach in the second round of the IBVL league playoffs. By placing first in the Bay Division, Costa earned a by in the first round of the tournament. According to Micheletti, the team will work on last minute adjustments in order to be prepared for its next game.

“To prepare for tomorrow I’m just going to work really hard in practice and fine tune everything so that by tomorrow I’ll be ready to play,” Micheletti said.
