Mira Costa’s baseball team defeated rival Redondo Union High School 2-1 away in the last Bay League match of the season on Thursday.
Senior pitcher Trevor Franklin pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts allowing three hits in the entire game.
“Our defense all around was great,” Franklin said. “ Thankfully there were no mistakes made which was a key contribution to what led us to victory.”
After two scoreless innings, Redondo’s junior pitcher Tyler Springman hit a solo homerun to right field giving the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead. Franklin then responded with two strikeouts ending the inning.
“It was a very well played game,” senior second base Will Proctor said. “We made all of the defensive plays and we did a great job of consistently getting on base throughout the whole game.”
The very next inning, the Mustangs were able to answer with a run of their own with junior outfielder Matt Besera advancing home on a sacrifice fly ball from senior first baseman Andrew Arteaga.
“Our team played very well on offense,” Besera said. “Offensively we battled in every at bat and came up with clutch hits when we needed it.”
In the last inning, senior outfielder Zack Chan hit a line drive single into center field allowing Proctor to advance home from third for the go ahead run, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
“This was a very important game because it gives us a lot of momentum to start and it was great for us to come out on top,” Proctor said. “We now have a higher seed when we approach playoffs.”
The Mustangs are now 24-6 overall and finished Bay League 7-3. Costa will play against El Segundo High School 14-16 overall in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) at home on Friday. According to Franklin, a big win like this one against Redondo helps them prepare for later games.
“Beating Redondo is a great team win for us,” Franklin said. “It’s a great momentum boost going into CIF.”
