Junior distance runner Melia Chittenden represented Costa’s track and field team at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Masters Meet on Friday May 27 at Cerritos College. Chittenden ran the 3200m which she had previously qualified for at the CIF Southern Section Finals.
Chittenden spent extra time training the week leading up to the race, training during lunch as well as the normal times required by the team. In the end, she placed eighth with a time of 10:32.91, a new personal record.
“Overall I think my race went well,”Chittenden said. “I beat my personal best time by five seconds and I felt reassured that I can consistently run around that time with each race. It was the fastest I’ve ever run before, so compared to other races it felt a lot harder and I had to make sure to stay in the race both physically and mentally so I wouldn’t give up.”
Chittenden now advances on to State alongside fellow junior Shante Robinson. The meet will take place on June 4 at Buchanan High School. Chittenden says she is not sure what to expect for the next meet.
“There are so many incredible runner across California that I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be able to race against them,” Chittenden said. “I’m hoping to pull out another [personal record] at state for a positive end to a long track season.”
