The Mira Costa Mustangs asserted their Bay League dominance in an afternoon game against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings Oct. 22.
The Bay League showdown started at 2:30 p.m. and ended before sundown with a final score of 15-7, Mustangs. With this victory, the Mustangs improved their record to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Bay League.
The first half was rife with Mustang defense but not very much offense. As the first half came to a close, Mira Costa trailed, 7-0.
However, in the final minutes of the second quarter, senior Sam Stekol made an interception and then ran the ball from the 33-yard line back to the seven-yard line.
Senior Brendan Sofen made a 19-yard field goal to close the end first half, and the Mustangs convened in the locker room with a 7-3 score.
After the half, the Mustangs came out with strong offense. At the end of the third quarter, Mira Costa gained possession when Palos Verdes was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, leading Sofen to another field goal.
The third quarter ended with score 7-6, Sea Kings leading, and Stekol moving the ball up the field with several catches.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs scored a touchdown, bringing the score to 12-7. The Mustangs attempted a two-point conversion but the Sea Kings denied them the points. As the fourth quarter ensued, the Mustangs demonstrated strong defense.
Ultimately, a turnover brought Sofen back out for his third field goal. The ball soared through the air and brought the score to 15-7. Costa’s defensive pressure held that score, making the second Bay League game a victory.
The Mustangs will host Bay League opponent Peninsula on Oct. 29. They hope to continue their Bay League dominance and remain undefeated.
