Even if music is not your forte, Costa senior, Jane Fishman, has rocked the boat by publishing a song of her own making onto an online publishing service.

Jane Fishman, a senior at Mira Costa, has taken her singing career to the next level by making her own songs and publishing them onto SoundCloud, a global online audio distribution platform, where she recently released her song “Something Better.”

“Musicians are definitely an interesting breed of people,” Fishman said. “They’re great and you all think alike, there’s that sharing of ideas, I love being involved in something.”

Between eighth and ninth grade Fishman began to take her singing even more seriously, by having her parents provide all of the necessary equipment and lessons, Fishman said. However, in high school Jane started having gigs in the South Bay in cafes within Hermosa, the Concerts In The Park Series, the Earth Day Festival, surf fests, and private parties.

“Singing and performing has given her a lot of self confidence, it’s made her work really hard because she knows how tough it is to break into the music business,” Senior Sidney Lee said. “No matter how competitive it gets, she’s always gonna have a positive attitude.”

Jane has four songs on SoundCloud, all with over three hundred views. For approximately 9 years her singing coach has been Gina Saputo, a USC alumni, who has taught and helped to inform Fishman in the world of music. Together they have worked on vocal agility, range development, songwriting, and musical delivery.

“Her mind has the harmonic complexity to sing through challenging material and she has developed great taste,” Saputo said. “Her voice is strong and she has confidence in her musical choices. She’s able to sing more material across different genres and does so with maturity and beautiful tone.”

According to Fishman, SoundCloud has been easy to work with, from uploading her music to recording straight from the application. Having her music online has allowed people to share and give good feedback on her music, Fishman said.

“I want to make music that I would listen to. I don’t know if I’ve gotten there yet but I’m trying to progress my way towards that,” Fishman said. “Making music has never stopped being fun.”

According to Fishman, growing up in a very musical environment has added to her dedication to singing and music; however, she chose to be a singer because it’s something she’s personally passionate about.

“My family definitely influenced Jane a lot and myself,” freshman at Costa and younger brother Cole Fishman said. “I’m also a musician so she’s really directed where my musical interests have gone.”

Fishman is applying to music schools including USC for their music program. Fishman said her parents have always encouraged her to do something music-related, they would be disappointed if she pursued something like business or law. According to Fishman, she wants to go to USC to get more training and make connections, work with new musicians, and be the best musician possible.

“If you have a love for anything there’s like no reason not to, do it, I think especially when you’re young right now is the best possible time,” Fishman said. “Do what interests you.”
