Mira Costa now offers online remediation courses through Cyber High for students who received a D or lower in a course or wish to recover course credits for three periods every day.

The classes in Cyber High are online and consist of reading, activities and exams. This year, English teacher Michael McAvin supervises Cyber High, which takes the place of a student’s elective in his or her schedule during periods 1, 2 or 3.

“Our old plan was if you got far behind in credits, we told you to go someplace else,” Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “We are here for all kids. They are on our campus, and they just got behind on credits; we shouldn’t just cast them off.”

Last year, Costa offered Cyber High in one period as opposed to the three offered this year. There are approximately 10 to 18 students in each period this year, McAvin said.

In addition to remediation purposes, Cyber High can also be used for initial credit, allowing students to take classes to advance.  However, initial credit is only offered for seniors who are significantly behind on the credits that are required to graduate.

“I would recommend Cyber High to a peer if they learn better one-on-one or online,” former Costa and Cyber High student Chad Nelson said.

If the student earns a higher grade on Cyber High than its previous grade in a given course, the new grade will replace the old one; however, the original grade will still remain on a student’s permanent school record.

“Cyber High gives students a chance to gain credits to make them college eligible,” McAvin said. “Because it gives them that opportunity, I think it’s awesome.”

A guidance counselor must recommend a student to take Cyber High. This year, students must take at least two courses on Cyber High during the school year, each of which takes eight weeks to complete.

“Our number-one concern is to provide [students] something to makeup those credits,” Dale said.
