The Day at the Beach, a South Bay triathlon company, hosted the 19th annual Hermosa Beach Triathlon at the Hermosa Beach Pier on Oct. 16 which featured a swim, bike, and run.
The triathlon contained a 1/4 mile ocean swim that runs parallel to the beach. The swim began south of the Hermosa Beach pier. After the swim, participants completed a 10 mile bike ride that began with a climb up Pier Avenue. The triathlon ended with a 3 mile run along the strand.
“The triathlon is a great, community based event designed for beginners and those ending their triathlon season,” event producer Blake Carey said. “It’s a fun way to get people exercising that also builds camaraderie in the multi-sport community.”
The race contains many different divisions including open men, women, and relay. Approximately 800 people compete in it every year.
“It’s a fun, local event that the community can get behind and support all these athletes, many of whom have never participated in a triathlon before,” Carey said. “We are proud to have the opportunity to produce the event for so long and couldn’t do it without the help and support or our sponsors, volunteers, the community and the City of Hermosa Beach.”
People of all ages participated in the event. Mira Costa Chemistry teacher Ernesto Nodado participates in triathlons and therefore is constantly training. To train, he swam in open water and ran or biked on the strand or at the gym.
“I’m looking forward to doing a race in familiar territory,” Nodado said. “Hopefully, I’ll get to see other Costa staff or students in the race.”
