Mira Costa’s girls basketball team fell to St. Anthony High School in the Battle At The Beach Tournament at Redondo Union on Saturday, with a score of 55-49. According to freshman Lauren Chao, the team needs to focus on playing the game we are good at, and continue to bond throughout the season.
Costa started off slow in the first quarter, but caught up by the end of the second quarter. During the third quarter, both teams kept fighting, until Costa lost energy. Costa was unable to catch up during the fourth quarter, and St. Anthony won the game, 55-49. According to senior Allie Navarette, for the next game the team will be practicing their press to make it a lot harder to beat.
“I think our team played okay today. We didn’t have everyone here as some players were taking the SAT so we did have to make that adjustment,” said Navarette.
Costa’s overall record is now 1-3. Mustangs will play on Tuesday against El Segundo High School, at Mira Costa. According to Kelli Toyooka, the team will be practicing hard so they can be ready for their competition.
“I think we could have run our offense a lot better,” Navarette said. “They had a girl that was 6’6 so it was hard to get shots as she was guarding the entire middle of the key.
