The California Educational Theatre Association (CETA) invited the Mira Costa Drama Department to attend and perform its fall play “Almost, Maine” on Jan. 13 and 14 at the annual CETA High School Theatre Festival.
The CETA festival is an annual festival of high school drama students and educators within Southern California. Costa’s performance of “Almost, Maine” won Best Technical Staff and Best Ensemble. In addition to performing, students were able to gain more experience and knowledge of theatre through workshops and classes held throughout the festival.
“It was fun meeting new people from other schools, watching other shows, and taking the workshops,” junior cast member Molly DeSimone said. “I learned that theater is such a powerful art form and that it can really change people’s lives.”
CETA sent adjudicators to evaluate high school fall productions and gave them an overall score based on the performance. High schools were sorted into four regions, and the school with the highest score from each region was invited to perform their entire show at the festival. Costa was the school selected to perform for the Los Angeles region.
“I think my performance went well,” DeSimone said. “Overall, the whole show was the best we had ever done it.”
