The Mira Costa girls rugby team was defeated by View Park in two exhibition matches, 0-39 and 10-22, at home on Friday. Despite the Mustangs offensive and defensive efforts, they were ultimately defeated by View Park.
The Mustangs remained scoreless throughout the first game with the ending score being 0-39. In the first half of the second game, they maintained a stable offense and defense, but couldn’t achieve a try. Freshman Shiann Nguyen began the second half with a 90 yard dash into the try zone converting the score to 5-17. In the last half of the game, senior Maria Meola scored a try with the final score being 10-22.
“I think we did a really good job of sticking with the game and holding our heads high even though we struggled with generating any offensive try,” Meola said. “I believe we need to improve on spreading out and running more plays but that will improve over time.”
Costa is currently 1-6-1 and 0-2 in Bay League. Their next game will be a tournament this Friday at View Park Prep High School.
“For next week’s game, I expect for the team to know the strategies of View Park Prep and be able to play harder,” junior Alexis Fonua said. “I will make sure they practice harder throughout the week and keep a high confidence.”
