Katherine Elias made her Mira Costa Poetry Out Loud debut by placing third in the school-wide competition.

Elias has always had a strong interest and passion for English and writing, which led to a passion for poetry as she studied it in school. When she learned of Costa’s participation in the nationwide competition Poetry Out Loud, she decided to participate because she enjoys reciting poetry. Her first time reciting poetry was last year at an In House Arts event, a monthly event where Costa artists share and showcase their differing talents such as singing, dancing, writing, and poetry at various members’ houses.

“I really enjoy poetry, and reciting it is a fun and interesting way to express myself,” Elias said. “Going to events like In House Arts has really encouraged me to get more into performing poetry,” Elias said.

Elias’s first poem was “Personal” by Tony Hoagland. The poem is known for its slightly funky style and meter, which contributed to the fun of reciting it, Elias said. She also read “To David, About His Education,” by Howard Nemerov.

“[‘Personal’] has a really interesting rhythm to it, so it is very cool to read out loud,” Elias said. “The unique rhythm makes it fun to recite for audiences and see their reactions.”

To prepare for competition, Elias said she read her poems over and over. Once she had them down, she practiced performing in front of a mirror.

“I wasn’t expecting to even place this year, but I definitely enjoyed the experience and will participate again next year,” Elias said.”
