Coming off a blowout win over Inglewood on Monday, the Mustangs looked to keep up the momentum against Redondo, which was also undefeated in league.
Costa’s girls basketball team lost, 57-37, in a home game on Tuesday. Unable to contain the Sea Hawks’ scoring, the Mustangs fell behind early in the game and were unable to recover.
“I think it was a really tough loss,” freshman center Lauren Chao said. “We came out with intensity but missed shots, and Redondo played with much more spirit than we did.”
Costa fell behind in the first quarter, 11-6. In the second, Costa bounced back with a layup from senior guard Halle Maeda and two free throws from senior forward Laura Sheckter. However, Costa continued to fall behind and the first half ended, 23-12.
“Our defense lacked, and we let Redondo score too many easy points,” junior guard Kelli Toyooka said.

Weak defense in the third quarter allowed Redondo to bump its lead to 34-17. However, junior guard Haley Herdman helped Costa make a final push, adding a basket in the fourth quarter. Chao put up more points, but the effort was not enough to overcome Redondo’s lead. The game ended, 57-37.
“In the last quarter, we were playing our top game, and we had better chemistry on the court,” Chao said.
Costa, 12-8 overall and 4-1 in Bay League, plays Peninsula High School at home today. Senior forward Allie Navarette said the game is a good chance for redemption.

“Penn is always a tough away game, so I know everyone is looking forward to playing them on our court,” Navarette said. “We were all working hard in practice this week to make sure that we take a win.”
