The Mira Costa Mustangs boys’ water polo team lost on Nov. 17 to Laguna Beach in the CIF semifinal game. The Mustangs could not upset the top ranked team and, at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center, they lost by a score of 5-2.
Costa was unable to find an offensive rhythm. Combined with the pressure of the game, the Mustangs were also overcome by frustration. Fouls and ejections were called on both sides of the pool.
The second period determined the outcome. Though leading 1-0, the Mustangs lost their offense and defense, allowing Laguna to score three goals. This deficit was insurmountable given the unrelenting Laguna defense.
The top performer of the game was senior Dana Tuttle. He kept the Mustangs in the game by having 10 blocked shots, keeping the game close.
This loss ended the Mira Costa boys’ water polo team’s season and stopped their run in the semifinal round.
