New Jersey based indie trio, Real Estate, released its fourth studio album, “In Mind,” shocking viewers with their unique style and production.

Real Estate impresses with an abundant collection of melodic guitar progressions and new wave sounding synthesizers, buts its downfall is the lack of variation in tone of instruments.

The band formed in 2011 and gained fame in 2014 with their 3rd studio album, “Atlas”. The band consists of singer and guitarist Martin Courtney, bassist Alex Beeker, and drummer Jackson Polis.

The band recruited electronic producer, Cole M.G.N., who is known for working with other indie artists such as Ariel Pink and The Lonely Island. The album was released through British pop record label Domino on Mar. 16, 2017.

The opening track, “Darling,” is a perfect display of the band’s ability to perform balanced guitar progressions and incorporate psychedelic synth tones. The addition of these pleasing aspects furthers the album’s relaxing atmosphere.

The two tracks, “Two Arrows” and “Same Sun” stand out the most on the album due to their distinct leisurely tone. Both tracks feature soothing vocals accompanied by a slow paced wavy synthesizer. The relaxing tone produced by the tracks reels in listeners.

Later on in the album, the tracks, “Stained Glass” and “White Light” feature a change of progression in the guitar rhythms. The change of tempo produces a more upbeat atmosphere and makes the album more enjoyable to listen to due to the inclusion of these specific beats.

The downfall of “In Mind” is the lack of variation in tone throughout the album. Song after song in the album repeat a cloudy pop tone that is reminiscent of 80’s music. A lack of change in tone makes the album difficult to listen to and enjoy in succession.

“In Mind” exhilarates listeners with a collection of splendid guitar progressions, and synthesizers reminiscent of 80’s dance music, but ultimately fails due to a lack of difference in the tone of each song.

Real Estate’s “In Mind” is available for streaming on Spotify or Apple Music and is available for purchase on ITunes for $12.99.
