The Mira Costa Jazz band placed second in both the High School Combo Intermediate B division and the High School Advanced division with scores of 185 and 179, respectively, yesterday at the Fullerton College Jazz Festival.
The Jazz band competed against 44 different high schools and they performed the pieces “Anthropology,” “At This Point in Time” and “Not to be Forgotten.” The adjudicators judged the performances on style, rhythm and other musical qualities.
“I enjoyed performing with the group on the stage and it is always fun to learn more about my personal instrument,” Jazz band member and junior Ian Cosner said. “I was very happy with how it went and it it always fun to perform with the rest of the Jazz band.”
According to Cosner, most of the pieces the Jazz band performed at the Fullerton Festival students also performed at their previous competition at Berklee High School in Boston, Massachusetts in February. Students perfected their pieces and learned the new piece, “Not to be Forgotten,” before the Fullerton Festival.
“I feel that we played extremely well as a whole and the soloists were all exceptional,” senior Tommy Tomikawa said.
