Mira Costa’s boys varsity tennis defeated Valencia High School 13-5 on Friday in their second California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) game. The top players were sophomore Matthew Poh, and doubles pair sophomores Kyle Sillman and Alex Fry.
Costa played well in both doubles and singles. In singles, Poh won two of his three game and junior Evan Fortier won both of his games. In doubles, Fry and Sillman won all three of their games and junior Shant Samuelian and freshmen Tim Dzhurinksiy won two games.
“Everyone stayed focused and that allowed them to play to their full potential,” Fry said.
The Mustangs, 17-2 overall and 8-1 in Bay League, will next play in the third CIF round on Monday against University High School . According to Fry, the next game will be very predictable and it could go either way since the other team is good.
“Our next game is going to be very tough because our opponents team is very deep,” Poh said. “We will have to play our best tennis to win the match.”
