After a season where Mira Costa defeated Palos Verdes at home and snapped their five year regular season winning streak, La Vista takes a look at the following season of the Mustang football team.
Mira Costa football finished the season 7-4 and lost to Paramount High School 49-21 in the first round of CIF. However, senior Zach Saros said that he will always remember this season and all the highlights that came with it.

“I will never forget the time we beat Palos Verdes, and the joy that it brought everyone.” Saros said. “Palos Verdes has beaten us a lot over the past couple of years so defeating them in my senior year meant a lot to me.”
Costa is going into next season with many key starters returning. Junior Linebacker Cody Kallenbach headlines the returners, as he was already captain last season and was the team leader in tackles.

“I consider last season a success. There are many things that need to improve but that doesn’t detract from our connection we had as a team,” Kallenbach said. “That connection makes a season a success winning record or not.”
The football program puts a lot of time in improving in the offseason, as every day the players are either working out in the weight room or doing field work with conditioning. Even this early in spring, the team is already going over defensive sets.
“Some things we can improve on are our pass defense, short pass game, and our conditioning,” Kallenbach said. “But this is small compared to the progress we have already made.”
On offense, the team is expecting the return of sophomore quarterback Reed Vabrey. Vabrey was thrust into the starting lineup last year when David Arredondo was injured in an early season game.
“I think that Reed did a great job and we really look forward to him doing big things next year,” Kallenbach said. “Our expectations are high, and we think that our experienced juniors and seniors will lead us to a very successful season.”
Many players are coming into the season with high expectations. Sophomore Cole Trejo, who started last year as a safety, expects nothing but big things from Mira Costa in the upcoming season.
“My expectations for this years team are the same as every other season,” Trejo said. “To win bay league, make the playoffs, and make a run at winning CIF.”
