Mira Costa’s girls golf team defeated North Torrance High School 236-301 at Chester Washington Golf Course but lost to Palos Verdes High School 212-220 at Palos Verdes Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.

Costa dominated the first game against North Torrance, successfully keeping its score far below 300. The top performers in the first round included sophomore Yui Ogihara (43), juniors Angelica Bigler (44) and Naomi Tsuang (45) for their accurate chip shots and putts, capturing the win for Costa. Even if I got it on the green in 3 strokes on a par 4 hole, I was able to get it in with a put and finish the hole with a par, said Ogihara.

“I think my putts and chips were pretty good today because I played Terranea yesterday,” Ogihara said. “But I still think I need to work on my 5 wood and how to smoothly hit the ball when it lands on dirt.”

In the second match against the team’s biggest competitor, Palos Verdes, the Mustangs failed to redeem themselves against the Sea Kings. With a top performance from junior Klara Nagy by the lowest score of 39 and sophomore Shani Waite by a score of 44, Costa seemed to be taking on Palos Verdes but eventually, they had to suffer another close loss against the Sea Kings.

“My shots today were dramatically different than at the beginning of the season and my drives went further and straighter,” Carmen Weiss said. “But they weren’t good enough to win the game.”

The Mustangs continue their season with an overall record of 5-3 and will next compete in the South Bay Girls’ Golf Classic tournament at Los Amigos Golf Course at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. The girls golf team will separate into 3 teams with 6, 3 and 3 players, respectively, and compete against schools such as Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and Mater Dei High School. The team is looking forward to the tournament and will try their very best to make a good start of this year’s Bay League, said Weiss.

“Golf is all about consistency so I think playing in three matches this week will definitely help me perform well in the tournament,” Weiss said. “I think our team constantly motivates each other which encourages me to do better.”
