The Mira Costa girls golf team played in the Walnut Mustang Invitational Tournament and placed seventh in the Championship Flight with a total score of 435 at California Country Club on October 2 at 8 a.m. Costa competed against other schools including Walnut, Troy, Aradia, Torrey Pines, Great Oak, La Serna and Beckman High School.

The Championship Flight team consisted of sophomores Shani Waite, Isabella Walker and Erica Skinner, junior Klara Nagy, and seniors Delilah Gunn and Phoebe Gunn. The leading scorer for the Mustangs was Waite with the lowest score of 82 and she was backed up by a score of 86 from Delilah Gunn and a score of 88 from Phoebe Gunn. Nagy also contributed with a final score of 89. Waite said that the tournament was a tough one for the team.

“We all had some problems out there on the course, but what I am most proud of is that we finished,” Waite said. “We didn’t come off the course as sore losers and we accepted what we shot and stuck with it. I think we can all learn that it is important to stay strong till the end and don’t fall.”

With an overall record of 7-3, Costa next faces West Torrance High School in the first Varsity Bay League match of the season at Chester Washington Golf Course on October 3. Phoebe Gunn said that she’s looking forward to playing in the first Bay League match of the year.

“I can’t believe we’re entering Bay League already,” Gunn said. “I hope our team gets to witness how much they’ve improved compared to last season and establish where they are now as Varsity players.”
