Mira Costa’s football team soared past the Morningside Monarchs on Friday, with outstanding performances from several of Costa’s key players.
The Mustangs defeated Morningside 41-29 on Oct. 13 at Coleman Field in Inglewood for their second straight win.
“[Friday’s] game was the most oddly officiated football game I’ve ever seen,” coach Cameron Chow said. “[It] forced our boys to play in a weird atmosphere, making it difficult to find our rhythm.”
The Monarchs opened the game with a rushing touchdown, but missed the extra point. Senior running back Vashon Hill answered back with a touchdown run. Both defenses played well for the remainder of the quarter, ending with the Mustangs only ahead 7-6.
“Our defense played hard and together, even though they scored we stayed disciplined and kept fighting,” sophomore cornerback Jackson Fischer said.
Early in the second quarter, Hill found the endzone again, putting the Mustangs up 14-6 after a nine yard scamper. The Monarchs cut into the Mustang lead with a late 35 yard field goal and Costa headed to the locker room with another slim 14-9 lead.
“We planned to run the ball and make sure the ball was moved down the field anyway we could,” senior offensive lineman Robert Fiene said.
The second half began with Hill’s third rushing touchdown, extending Costa’s lead to 21-9. On the next play, the Monarchs returned a 60 yard Costa kickoff for a touchdown. The quarter ended with a rushing touchdown from junior quarterback Reed Vabrey to give Costa a 28-15 lead.
“The key to winning the game was our ability to run the ball,” senior tight end Max Stewartson said.
In the final quarter, both teams combined for four touchdowns, three of which came on the ground. The game ended with the Mustangs on top, 41-29.
“Physically we ran all over them and executed extremely well,” junior quarterback Nick Carpino said. “When we surprised them with a play action, we burned them.”
The Mustangs, now 3-4 overall and 2-0 in Bay League, will face the Inglewood Sentinels tonight at Waller Stadium.
“[Inglewood has] some really terrific athletes including their running back and linebackers, so we got to keep them contained in order to win,” coach Donald Morrow said.
