The Mira Costa girls rugby team was defeated by View Park Preparatory High School 17-42 in its first home game of the season on Saturday. The Mustangs calmly maintained their pace throughout the game but couldn’t beat View Park’s fast and aggressive offense.
The game kicked off with View Park scoring a try to take a 5-20 lead into halftime. The top scorers of the day included juniors Ashley Brownsberger, Taianna Fonua and senior Brittany Meeks who each came out strong at the start of the second half and scored a try, bringing the final score to 17-42.
“I don’t think my performance throughout the game was that great,” Meeks said. “I didn’t know what to do, so I just kind of grabbed onto a girl’s leg and hoped for the best.”
Costa is currently 0-1 and will next compete in a friendly game on Saturday. Although they couldn’t start off a new season with a win, the team is excited for the rest of the season and to see their improvement, according to the team captain, senior Alexis Fonua.
“We all tried our very best, and it’s totally fine even if we didn’t do all that great,” Fonua said. “I think our girls are doing very well so far, and we will try to redeem ourselves at the next game for sure.”
