TEDx Manhattan Beach hosted an event at Mira Costa on Nov. 4. The theme of the event was “Anything’s Possible,” and featured many different booths relating to the theme.
One of these booths was run by the Advanced Placement Art class, giving students a chance to showcase some of the art that they have been working on during the school year.
“Mrs. Heredia invited anyone who wanted to exhibit to put their work up,” senior Maren Appert said. “Luckily, she had geared the project that week to match up with TEDx’s theme of science and art blending. I ended up putting my piece in the show because it is always nice to get exposure and put your style and artwork out there.”
This project gave the students in the class the chance to explore their creative side with a different theme than they usually work with and showcase their art in a place where many people would see it.
“I have showcased my work publicly before in small local exhibitions, but knowing how many people came specifically for the event and would genuinely be interested in the art was something I’d think all artists can appreciate,” Appert said. “Being a focus is always better than an accompanist.”
For the assignment, Mrs. Heredia assigned a theme, “Science Meets Art,” but the art also had to relate to the more general theme of the entire TEDx event, “Anything’s Possible.” This allowed students to get creative and work with a theme that they had not worked with before, Appert said.
“The theme of the show was “Anything’s Possible”, and the prompt we were given for the project was a scientific take on that theme,” senior Faye Amato said. “Lots of people did anatomy themed pieces and very cool diagrams and things like that.”
Many art students have not worked on a project with this type of theme before, and the combination of art and anatomy inspired new creative ideas, Appert said.
“There were plenty of creative ideas such as scientific drawing and pictures. I myself chose to make a brain out of frozen alphabet Spaghettios and take a picture,” Appert said. “Though all mediums were showcased, the constant theme kept them all centered.”
Events like TEDx where art students have the chance to showcase their artwork are hard to come by, but valuable. Any chance to display art is important, as it can lead to a variety of different opportunities, Appert said.
“I particularly think TEDx is a good way to get an audience while not isolating your population to be solely art lovers,” Appert said.
