Mira Costa’s Link Crew introduced the first installment in a series of forums called “Let’s Talk About It,” in which underclassmen can ask Link leaders for advice regarding high school on Dec. 8 in Room 20.

Link Crew is a program in which Costa juniors and seniors help  freshmen adjust to high school. The first forum was called “Surviving Finals,” and took place on Dec. 7, in order to teach freshmen study tips and give them time-management advice, Link leader Liam Barberi said.

“This was a great opportunity for us Link leaders to mentor the freshmen and sophomores by giving them advice, which will hopefully give them confidence going into their finals,” Link leader and junior Chase Evers said. “We want everyone to feel accommodated on our campus and hope this was a step in the right direction.”

According to Barberi, English Teacher and Link Crew advisor Maddie Hutchinson and 15 Link leaders were prepared to answer questions pertaining to finals, but Link Crew was dissatisfied with the  turnout.

“Only three freshman showed up, but we were well-equipped to answer any questions about finals,” Barberi said. “We are definitely hoping to get more students to come to the forum next time so they can learn from the upperclassmen and feel supported at Costa.”

According to Hutchinson, Link Crew hopes to host another forum in the near future to discuss spring sports, finding a club to join and summer school. Link Crew tries to make the forum relate to what the freshmen are interested in during that time of the year, Hutchinson said.

“With so many options at Costa for spring sports, we thought a great option for our next forum would be about time management and the pros and cons of these sports,” Link leader Max Haber said. “Managing sports and school work can be tough, so we hope we will get a greater turnout next time.”

The forum took place during lunch, but the Link Crew class meets everyday during second period. Some Link leaders, however, are involved in “Let’s Talk About It” but do not take Link Crew as a class. During the class, Link leaders plan events, like the forum, to help make Costa a more comfortable place to learn.

“During Link Crew, we have been working hard to make Costa a place where freshmen feel their needs are satisfied,” Evers said. “Next year, we hope to continue the process of choosing Link leaders that will help the freshmen feel safe, not only on the first day of school, but throughout the year.”

Although the “Surviving Finals” forum didn’t have the turnout Link Crew expected, many Costa students participate in sports, so they are hoping to see more than three people attend next time, Haber said.

“Link Crew is not just about these forums though, it’s about if someone needs a friend to eat lunch with,” Hutchinson said. “We want to do anything we can to help freshmen find their place with more ease.”
