Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Peninsula 58-43 on Tuesday, Jan. 9 to kick off their first league game at home. The top performer included senior Hayley Herdman who not only had a strong offensive game, but also made it difficult for the Panthers to score by maintaining a strong defense throughout the game.
The Mustangs started the first quarter out strong with a score of 14-12. Costa did not let up in the second quarter, continuing to make smart passes and having a consistent defense leading to a halftime score of 29-18. The Panthers started to make a comeback in the final two quarters, but it was too late for Peninsula who trailed by 15 at the end of regulation.
“Our strengths in this game were executing our offenses and also going hard for every single rebound,” Herdman said. “We came in focused on winning, help defense and playing the best that we can.”
MCHS girls basketball is now 7-7 overall and 1-0 in League, and will play Palos Verdes on Friday Jan. 12th at Palos Verdes High School. The Mustangs are looking to improve on certain defensive skills like shifting to help according to senior Kira Escovar.
“I believe that our team can always work on our defense and I also individually want to take more shots in the upcoming games,” Escovar said.
