“The End of the F***ing World,” an adaptation of the graphic novel by the same name, contains mystery and suspense in every episode.

The introduction to the show starts off with a brief recap of the two main characters, Alyssa, played by Jessica Barden, and James, played by Alex Lawther.  The storyline of the show focuses on their separate perspectives of the same events. James is introduced as an emotionless teen who stuck his hand in a fat fryer in order to feel something and Alyssa is the new girl in town who is full of rage.

James has killed animals from a young age, but as he grows older, he becomes bored with animals and wants to kill a person, who he decides will be Alyssa. After the two interact, he decides that in order to get close enough to her to kill her without revealing his plan, he will have to date her.

Main characters Alyssa and James possess unique personalities like no other. Alyssa has an aggressive and spontaneous personality which constantly engages the audience. On the other hand, James has a very mysterious personality that is hard to read at first. This uncertainty fascinates audience members as they try to figure out James’ next move.

Barden and Lawther both play characters with strong personalities that are difficult to portray, but they do it in a very natural manner. Barden flawlessly takes on a persona of an overly-moody teenager who swears every other word she speaks. Lawther is successful in completing the difficult task of an emotionless psychopath with stiff behavior and a monotone voice.

The first episode ends with a major cliff-hanger, which entices the audience to continue to watch later episodes. The numerous small cliff-hangers that appear in every episode continually fascinate the audience with plot twists and unanswered questions.

Throughout the episodes, the characters narrate events as they happen as well as their inner thoughts and emotions. This description provides the viewer with further information about the characters than what can be seen on screen and it provides a sense of inclusion in the show.

Although each character possesses a unique personality that intrigues viewers, they also can make the viewer very uncomfortable. At times, Alyssa and James’ interactions are so awkward that they cause the viewer to feel uncomfortable, such as James’ lack of emotions in the beginning of the show.

“The End of the F***ing World” is full of talented actors, dramatic scenes broken up by comedy and numerous cliff-hangers. The riveting plot leaves the audience continually wanting more.

This series can be viewed on Netflix and is appropriate for ages 15 and up.
