The Mira Costa girls rugby team fell to View Park and Carson High School 15-10 and 3-2 at Carson High School on Jan. 26. The Mustangs struggled to maintain a stable defense and Costa’s offensive front failed to further their lead throughout the two matches with the absence of their team captain Alexis Fonua.

During the first game against Carson High School, Costa’s offense failed to pressure the opposing players in multiple scrums, allowing three tries by the Colts. In the second game against View Park High School, the Mustangs tried several times to improve the score, but the Knights eventually claimed the victory, defeating the Mustangs by 3-2.

“I think that Friday’s games were the best games that we have played so far,” junior Ashley Brownsberger said. “We are slowly learning how to use each other’s abilities and play well with each other more.”

Costa is currently 1-3 overall and will next play against St. John Bosco High School at a home game on Thursday. Although the game didn’t turn out too well, the team’s not disappointed, said senior Leslie Hester.

“We didn’t have great communication with each other, so we’ll definitely be working on that this week,” Hester said. “We will try to connect to each other better as a team during the upcoming games.”
