The Mira Costa boys tennis team lost their perfect season record to Peninsula High School 10-8, on Apr. 12 at Peninsula high school. The top performers of the match included doubles partners, sophomore Tim Dzhurinskiy and junior Shant Samuelian, for winning two out of three of their sets.
Dzhurinskiy and Samuelian won their first two sets 6-3 and 7-5, but later lost their last set 5-7. Senior Evan Fortier, junior Kyle Sillman, and junior Matthew Poh all won two out of three of their singles matches which was unfortunately not enough to give them the edge over Peninsula.
“My partner and I held and broke really well despite the 20-30 mph winds and used it to our advantage to hit our spots,” Dzhurinskiy said. “We were one of the last matches in the second round and had huge crowds so we used that pressure and adrenaline in our match.”
The Mustangs are currently 12-1 overall and 5-1 in Bay League. The Mustangs will head over to Dos Pueblos High School on Apr. 13 for their next match.
“On the weaker side, we underestimated the #3 team and they came out of nowhere to win a really close set,” Dzhurinskiy said. “As a team we played really well but I think we were a little too relaxed at the end and couldn’t come out with a win.”
