Mira Costa’s Badminton team routed San Marino High School 19-2 in the consolation semifinals of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Team Championships on May 10 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The Mustangs handedly took on San Marino by outscoring the Titans heavily in almost all of their games.
Mixed doubles players gave Costa a solid start by sweeping their opponents in all of their events. With girls singles players including junior Lulu Yu and senior Scarlett Luo winning three out of their four games, doubles partners seniors Audrey Kim and Audrey Mei contributed to the win by earning two wins with a score of 21-5. Ultimately, boys singles and doubles sealed the victory by bringing home four more points by the end of the tournament.
“I think we came into this game strong and confident, and we all really wanted to beat San Marino,” Luo said. “I feel like we started CIF right and I really hope we make it to the finals.”
The Mustangs will next face Cabrillo High School in consolation finals on May 15 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. The consolation finals will be the last event of CIF Team Championship playoffs, according to captain Lulu Yu.
“I’m pretty confident that we’ll be able to pull off enough points as individual players to advance to the next round,” Yu said. “Hopefully, we bring out the best in us at the tournament next week and make Costa proud.”
