The Mira Costa Parent Teacher Student Association and Associated Student Body held several activities from May 7-11 to celebrate Costa’s annual Teacher Appreciation Week.
Throughout the week, ASB members gave staff members candy, cookies and catered lunches.
“One of the main goals of Teacher Appreciation Week is to show appreciation for the approximately 300 adults on this campus who come here everyday to make the world a better place for our kids,” ASB Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said.
“Usually, when there are events for teachers, I get excited for food or coffee since it’s nice to come to school and have one less thing to worry about like breakfast,” English teacher Lindsey Valbuena said. “We are always so appreciative for what is provided.”
The goal of the teacher appreciation lunch was to show appreciation for not only teachers, but staff as well, Claypoole said. Staff members had a variety of food items to choose from and ate as a group outside of the cafeteria. In order to pay for the Teacher Appreciation Week activities, ASB used money from its fundraisers throughout the school year.
“I think sometimes students do not realize how hard teachers work on their behalf,” Valbuena said. “It is not just the gifts, it’s mainly the notes and letters that are the most impactful and special to me that make me feel like this is why I do what I do.”
The PTSA also organized a coffee cart in front of the administration building for teachers and staff that morning. PTSA volunteers were able to hold these activities as a part of their Parent Teacher Student Association budget made up of donations from parents and others that joined the PTSA. The PTSA decided to move their Teacher Appreciation lunch that they organize for teachers until the end of the school year due to ASB’s lunch for Costa’s staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, PTSA President Dolly Boden said.
“The teachers are building the students of tomorrow; they are making them grow up to be responsible adults,” Boden said. “It is always nice to appreciate your teachers for all of the hard work they are doing to help you become the best you can be.”
ASB handed out notes each day of Teacher Appreciation Week to all of Costa’s staff. ASB gave out Cracker Jacks and Extra gum to teachers and staff members and the cafeteria made approximately 800 cookies to give to teachers and staff, Claypoole said.
“I enjoyed handing [the treats] out since some of the staff members aren’t as appreciated as they should be and making them happy felt good,” ASB member Kate Condren said.
