The Mustangs lost to the Lancers 23-20 in a close game. The team’s offense missed some opportunities in the red zone that would have changed the course of the game, according to senior quarterback Nick Carpino.
“I thought we played okay on offense, but we could have moved the ball a little better and converted in the red zone, “ Carpino said.
The first half was off to a slow start for the Mustangs when La Serna put the first points up on the board. The touchdown did not go unanswered, when Carpino passed to senior running back Cole Trejo for Costa’s first touchdown of the game. Unfortunately, La Serna came back strong with an additional touchdown and a field goal, putting the Lancers up 17-7.
“I was just hoping that it [the touchdown] gave our offense and the rest of our team some energy to start getting a little more hype for the rest of our game, and I think it did that, “ Trejo said.
The second half opened with another Mustang touchdown, as Carpino threw a screen pass to sophomore wide receiver Brody McKinnon who dashed into the endzone, making the score 17-14. After La Serna scored again, Carpino passed to sophomore wide receiver Danny Millea who managed to score for Costa, despite being under tight coverage. In the end, the Mustangs were unable to clinch the win, losing 23-20.
“After I scored that touchdown I thought we could pull it together as a team,” Millea said. “We did great overall and we had a great game.”
The Mustangs, now 1-1 overall, will face the El Segundo Eagles away next Friday, in their second non-conference game of the season. The team needs to work on finishing their drives and not going down in the red zone, according to Millea.
“I think we should just come back stronger and have a better mentality than we did this game,” McKinnon said. “This game is going to be the only loss of the season.”
