Jessica Lubs took over as temporary Vice Principal for Vice Principal Jessica Bledsoe and will later take over for Tara Grings when she goes on maternity leave.

Lubs started at Mira Costa on Sept. 24. She previously taught English at El Segundo High School and later worked as a Teacher on Special Assignment for the El Segundo Unified School District on issues relating to Categorical Funds and the English Learners Program. She was then a Field Work Instructor at Loyola Marymount University, where she worked with professors and student teachers at the university.

“It is a really steep learning curve, but it’s cool to do something different,” Lubs said. “As an English teacher, I liked trying new things and making it different, but even after a period of time there’s only a certain kind of learning curve you can achieve. This is a totally different challenge.”

Lubs has been substituting for Bledsoe who is on maternity leave until March. When Bledsoe returns, Lubs will then take over for Grings, who plans on taking leave in April.

“I find Ms. Lubs very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and willing to dive in on all the things that we do, which is kind of fear-inspiring for most people,” Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said. “She is very willing to be a part of the community, and she wants to go out of her way to become a part of Costa.”

As temporary VP for Bledsoe, Lubs is currently in charge of overseeing ninth grade students and the English and Foreign Language Departments. In addition, she is responsible for roles such as overseeing counseling, master scheduling, 504 accommodation plan supervision, transcripts, student support programs, foreign exchange students and long-term substitutes.

“I think Ms. Lubs is doing a wonderful job,” Costa School Psychologist Janet Allen said. “She is very supportive and very interested in our students needs and how she can support everyone. It is a pleasure to work with her.”

When Grings goes on maternity leave, Lubs will be in charge of the tenth grade students and the Visual and Performing Arts and Special Education Programs. She also will oversee issues relating to technology on campus, testing, Aeries and Canvas administration, the library and textbooks and the front office operations.

“I am really excited for the opportunity to be here, it’s really awesome,” Lubs said. “Costa is such a neat place and it has been a great experience. I am looking forward to learning a lot.”
