Mira Costa Boys Soccer faced Peninsula High School this Friday 1/18. Senior Max Haber and Junior Alex Rieg both scored to bring the Mustangs to a 2-0 victory at home.

“The team played super well,” Haber said. “We have great team chemistry and understand how to play well together. It was a great win and further boosted our confidence going into these last few games of Bay League.”

The Mustangs came out full speed, having the majority of the possession in the first half. A few minutes into the game the ball was thrown in to Haber. He dribbled across the box and scored off of a shot to the far post, giving Costa the lead.

“I was super excited to score the first goal of an important game and give the team momentum,” Haber said.

As the time was winding down in the first half, Costa had a throw in near the box. The ball was thrown into Rieg’s feet and he shot the ball in the back of the net. The second half ended 2-0.

“It always feels good to score but especially to help the team and keep us on the strong foot,” Rieg said.

As the second half began, Costa continued to high-press Peninsula. Both teams had few chances to score, even though the Mustangs had the majority of the possession.

“I think that we had a pretty good game and possessed well, which really frustrated Peninula’s team,” Rieg said.

As the second half went on, Costa continued to create chances to score, but never closed on these chances. The game ended in a 2-0 victory for the Mustangs.

“In my opinion, we dominated the majority of the game,” Haber said. “Our only real weakness was not converting all of our chances. It could have been 3 or 4-0 instead of 2-0.”

The Mustangs are currently in first place in Bay League with an undefeated season so far. They take on Palos Verdes High School this Tuesday 1/22, and are hoping to keep their winning streak alive.

Our next game is a big one against Palos Verdes,” Rieg said. “Hopefully we will stay undefeated for the rest of the season if we continue playing the way we have been playing.”
