The Mira Costa Mustangs kept their winning streak against Long Beach Poly with a victory of 4-2 in their second regional game at home on Feb. 28.
Mira Costa began the first half with a slow start. Costa struggled to defend the ball, letting in one goal early in the first half. The final score of the first half was 0-1 Mustangs down. Costa started the second half reenergized and came out exploding with energy. Freshman Sierra Sargent led the Mustangs in their comeback with their first goal, making the score 1-1. Costa charged through Cal Poly’s defense with goals from Junior Rachel Rosen and Junior Grace Watkins. Costa let up one goal in the final minutes of the game, but ended with a victory score of 4-2.
“We started off the game very flat and discouraged due to nerves,” junior Ashley Stepczyk said. “Towards the second half once we got our first and second goal we built up our momentum and played our hearts out.”
Mira Costa Mustangs will face off against West Hills highschool at home on Mar. 2 at 4 pm in the Regional Finals.
“We know West Hills is a good team because they beat Sunny Hills who we lost to in the CIF Final,” junior Grace Watkins said. “We worked hard to get here and we are looking forward to playing at home. We are going to give it everything we’ve got to take home a victory on Saturday.”
