Despite trailing in the final inning, the Mustangs rallied to earn a big win against the Oaks Christian Lions.
The Saturday game saw the Mustangs defeat Oaks Christian 3-2. Junior Kyle Karros led the team with a home run and a walk off double.
“I’m super glad I was able to help out the team and drive in some key runs in the last inning,” Karros said. “[Jared Karros] threw a great game and it’s just a huge team win especially with the Redondo game and CIF playoffs right around the corner.”
The Mustangs struggled in the first two innings as they were unable to score any runs and gave up two runs on defense. The second inning ended 2-0 with the Lions in the lead.
“We had a kind of slow start, but Oaks Christian is a tough team and overall we played well,” sophomore Jonah Storey said.
However, both teams played well on defense in the next two innings as neither team put a run on the board. At the end of the fourth inning, Oaks Christian still led 2-0.
“After we walked into the dugout coach Keith called all of us outside to talk to us about fighting until our last out, which helped us win the game,” junior Jackson Meignout said.
The Mustangs finally broke through during the fifth inning. Costa rallied with a few hits and a home run by Karros, which put Costa on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1. The sixth inning was a stalemate as neither team could add to their score.
“Coach Costley really wanted all of us to keep our heads in the right spot and talked with Kyle for a couple minutes before his at-bat, about how he could help the team by playing small ball,” Meignout said.
In the last inning of the game, Karros hit a walk off double and brought in sophomore Jonah Storey and senior Chase Meidroth for two runs and for the win. The game ended with a Mustang victory 3-2.
“Kyle’s hit allowed us to get the win,” Storey said. “As a team we played well and this was a big win for us.”
The Mustangs played Centennial High School on Wednesday at Centennial where the team defeated the Apaches 12-0. Costa is now 18-7 overall and 7-0 in Bay League and holding onto a five game winning streak. They play Centennial again today at home.
“We played a good game start to finish,” Meidroth said. “Good way to get rolling into Redondo and CIF time with a solid win verses Christian Oaks.”
