Current Mira Costa freshmen, sophomores, and juniors voted for next year’s ASB class and board officers on April 24 during their second period.
The election only determined class officers and ASB board members which includes ASB Board president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, class presidents, class vice presidents, and class secretary/treasurers. The 2019-2020 school year’s ASB Board president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer are Kate Condren, John Darcy, Livy Arensdorf, and Francesca Bennett, respectively.
“I am excited and honored to win the election, especially since Ella and Ambria were both such great candidates,” junior and ASB Board Vice-President Elect John Darcy said. “I’m most looking forward to getting everyone involved in school events next year.”
Students running for positions began campaigning the week before the election. Student-candidates made colorful posters, handed out treats, and made T-shirts for people supporting their campaign.
“I helped my friends who were running by posting photos of them on my Snapchat and Instagram along with wearing their campaign shirts all week,” Sophomore Jacqueline Greely said.
Some student-candidates utilized social media to campaign, posting creative videos and photos to announce their running. Junior Ambria Benson artistically edited photos that she put on instagram by drawing designs on top of the photos of her decked out in green and gold. She drew the silly string coming out of the cans she was holding to add a creative touch to her campaign.
“I came up with the idea for my photo with the silly string just by browsing at Party City and thinking it would be cool for a photo,” Benson said.
Junior and ASB Board President-Elect Kate Condren posted a humorous video on instagram, drawing notice to her campaign and her school spirit. Condren also dressed up every day of her campaign and handed out candy throughout the week. On the day of the election, Condren wore a green sumo suit with the words “KATE 4 ASB PREZ” painted on the front.
“Making my campaign video took about three hours and I had so much fun making it,” Condren said. “I think making campaign videos is a great way to show that you’re willing to put yourself out there!”
Chaz Wedbush and Jack Dalton tied for sophomore class president, therefore competed in a run-off election where current freshman voted between the two candidates at lunch on April 25. Chaz Wedbush won the run-off election and is now appointed as the sophomore president of the class of 2022.
“Winning the run-off election felt very accomplishing,” freshman and Sophomore Class President-Elect Chaz Wedbush said. “Next year I want to bring more spirit to the sophomore class.”
