Outside of the classroom, Learning Center teacher Kristen Garberg strives to get her voice out.
Garberg does voice over recordings for special events and videos in hopes of someday pursuing media broadcasting in addition to her job at Costa.
Garberg does her voice overs and media broadcasting at her own home studio. “Anything that gets my voice out there, regardless if I’m tired or not, I have to take that step for my career because that is what I want to do in life,” Garberg said.
Garberg first got started in media broadcasting when she was in need of a school job and got hired in radio at Cal State Long Beach Media Center during her senior year of college, Garberg said. Here she started doing media broadcasting for events such as red carpets.
“It was kind of a blessing in disguise to get fired from Cal State Long Beach Recreation Center in that it opened up these doors that could potentially get me somewhere,” Garberg said.
Garberg has recorded ESPN sports commentary for college football as well as radio commercials for hospitals, senior centers and companies such as Waba Grill.
“I enjoy doing [media broadcasting]; everything I do is potentially an internship because in media broadcasting in order to get the big dollars you have to have a big resume that intrigues people,” Garberg said.
Colleges all over the nation and their radio stations hold a contest where students can submit their radio submissions. During the competition, Garberg won the Golden Microphone Award for the most innovated show.
“It’s really something interesting and special to become this character that you don’t get to be everyday,” Garberg said. “Another reason I like it is that I don’t have to have my face everywhere; I do what I do because I like my voice to be heard.”
