The Mustangs brought an offensive and defensive storm to Bellflower on Friday, beating the Mayfair Monsoons, 37-26.

Costa went up against Mayfair High School on September 6th at 7 p.m in Bellflower. The game was the third week on the road for the Mustangs, and saw major improvement on both offense and defense for Costa, defensive coordinator Ray Lee said.

“This week, we really took our offense to a higher level, “ Lee said.

The Mustangs started off strong, capitalizing on the run. After a series of powerful runs, running back Kage Geoghegan managed to land Costa in field goal position on the opening drive. A field goal by junior kicker Thomas Southey then put the first points on the board, as Costa led, 3-0. Costa’s dominance continued when the Mustangs recovered a Mayfair fumble, and junior Jaden McDonald ran the ball into the endzone for a pick six, making the score 13-0. Another twenty-five yard field goal by Southey gave the Mustangs a 13-0 lead going into the locker room.

“Our ability to run the ball really contributed to our overall success on offense, “ Lee said.

The Monsoons brought the thunder going into the second half, scoring on their opening drive, making the score 13-6. However, the Mustangs quickly answered the touchdown when junior running back Ryan Moreno scored on a one yard rush. Costa then intercepted a Mayfair ball, which Costa’s offense turned into a touchdown when senior wide receiver Jackson Fischer caught a pass from junior quarterback Sam Whitney, giving Costa a 20-6 lead. After another Mayfair touchdown, Costa took back control when Whitney connected with junior receiver Danny Millea in the red zone for a touchdown Another field goal by Southey closed out the game for the Mustangs, with a final score of 37-26.

“[This] Friday’s growth defensively was a step in the right direction, “ Lee said.

The Mustangs, now 1-2, will go up against El Segundo High School at Waller Stadium at 7 p.m. on September 13th. The Mustangs hope to step up their defense next week, Lee said.

“We hope to execute defensively and offensively to the point where we can execute on a higher level than we have not reached this season, “ Lee said.
