The Mustang girls tennis team continued to play with high intensity moving forward in their matches, winning 13-5. The girls consecutively proved their top scores in single-player matches, along with outstanding scores in doubles matches. The leading Costa player, sophomore, Hailey Huynh, played a competitive match against Marlborough’s top competitor.

Costa started off strong in round one of their singles matches. Senior Audrey Vo played some stiff competitors and lost her first set to Marlborough’s number one player 3-6. Vo changed her strategy when moving forward into her second and third set, hitting the ball in her opponent’s deeper side of the court. She won her second set 6-0 and in her third set 6-1.

“I thought we all collectively played good, but we can always play better, but I think everyone pulled through with the matches,” said Vo. “I’m really excited to play more competitive matches with the team as the season goes on. [I’m excited to see] how far our team will go this year and how much we have improved from previous years.”

In the first round of doubles, junior Kacey Feng and sophomore Sydney Vo, improved their scores from previous matches. In the first set, they won 6-3, scoring lower than expected. The girls played strong in their second and third sets and swept their opponents, 6-0.

“I felt more confident in my game after the second and third set after having a tough start with the first match,” said Sydney Vo “I’m most excited for the competition we’re going to have today and like how our team will have a fun and competitive game.”

In the second round of matches, Huynh faced off against Marlborough’s number one player. Being one of the longer matches of the day, both competitors fought hard. Huynh took over in her set matches with her fast curving serve, winning 6-3, along with winning both her second and third sets, 6-1. Which helped Huynh secure her team’s overall victory.

“I was in shock and I was really happy to win an upset match for the team,” said Huynh. “I think this really helped us win more easily and get our overall win in the end.”

In the end, the girls effortlessly took the win, 13 to 5. The Mustangs kept their winning streak alive, and they are preparing for the reason of their already incredible season, along with prepping for CIF.

“Next week, I hope the team will continue to play aggressively in every match and we continue to maintain our high energy levels,” senior Kiki Daviduk said. “Hopefully, our good streak does not end and we can continue through our season undefeated.”

The Mustangs are 5-0 overall in games, including taking first place at their first tournament at Stanford. The girls will next go up against Westlake on Sept. 18th at Costa.

“Winning the Golden State Classic Tournament was absolutely amazing this year with the team,” Vo said. “It was a first for Mira Costa, so definitely coming out of it now, we know that we have to be ready to play so that we can continue to have similar results from then to today. There’s definitely pressure on everyone to do well this year, but I think we’ll be fine as long as we keep practicing and working hard.”
