The Mira Costa Girls Volleyball Team traveled to Santa Barbara High School on Thursday, Sept. 9 to play in the annual Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, defeating San Marcos in the finals to take first place overall in the tournament.
Over the weekend, the Mustangs played a total of 4 teams over the course of 3 days. The teams included Valencia, Canyon Crest, San Marcos, and Santa Barbara. The girls ended with an overall 4-0 record after sweeping San Marcos in the finals with a score of 25-14, 25-22, 25-13.
“In my opinion, the team did really well with pushing through tough matches,” said Junior Nikki Underwood. “We had great energy from both the players on the court and those on the bench, especially during the finals.”
Following this successful tournament, Junior Amanda Burns, Junior Savannah Green, and Underwood made the All Tournament Team, and Nikki Underwood was also awarded with the Finalist MVP Award. Everyone in the tournament was in contention for the awards, but Costa’s performances on and off the court lead them win the honors.
“It’s was a little intimidating being new to varsity this year,” Sophomore Savannah Standage said. “But the girls are all so welcoming and sweet which let us get closer really quickly. The girls have made this experience so much fun for me and I love being on the team with them.”
The mustangs are scheduled to play Leuzinger High School on Sept. 25 at MBMS. Their current overall record is 4-2.
“If we keep playing like we are playing now, I believe that we will make it really far and end with a really good record,” said Standage.
