Mira Costa girls tennis battled against Westlake at home. With last year the game very close, the girls again secured a win. Though the game was cut short, with Westlake forfeiting the last 2 matches, and only playing 16 matches, with the final score 14-4.
Leading singles player sophomore Haily Huynh, played a competitive match against Westlake’s top player. The girls played hard and went into an extra set. Huynh had a strong strategy and placed the ball in her opponent’s deep corners. There was a large debate on the score of the set and match score overall, and it took a large portion of time, which affected the game. To resolve the issue, both Coach Joe Ciasulli and Westlake’s head coach came onto the court to help the competitors come to a solution. Huynh made a comeback and won the tiebreaker in the third set 7-6(4).
“I felt actually quite calm because I was trying to not think about the end result but I ended up pulling through and winning the match after some controversy and some mistakes,” Huynh said. “I was very frustrated because I knew I was right and she was not being cooperative towards me and my coaches. I was scared that I was gonna lose points but I ended up solving it.”
In round 1 of doubles, senior Kiki Daviduk and senior Hannah Bergin played with strength and intensity while playing their opponents. The girls took initiative, as Bergin led the duo to volley the ball at the net. The girls won their first set 6-1 and won their match, which helped the Mustangs get their overall win.
“I thought Kiki and I played really well together today,” Bergin said. “Working off each other and having really good communication aside from other games really helped us have our best foot forward in our match.”
Week after week, the girls consecutively proving their passion for the sport and their dedication through skill in the scores of the game. The Mustangs with next play Beverly Hills on September 26th, at home and are third in Bay League.
“I thought we all collectively played good, but we can always play better but I think everyone pulled through with the matches,” senior Audrey Vo said. “I’m really excited to play more competitive matches with the team as the season goes on and see how far our team will go this year and how much we have improved from previous years.”
