In their first round of CIF, Mira Costa Girls Volleyball was able to keep the ball in their court against Laguna Beach High School 3-2.
The Mustangs went up against Laguna on Thursday Oct. 24, at Laguna Beach High School. The girls didn’t miss a beat as they won the first set 25-20. During the second and third set, the Breakers started to pick up speed and beat the Mustangs 11-25 and 21-25. Although they were down in the third set, Costa was able to come back and win the fourth set 29-27. In the fifth set tiebreaker, the Mustangs prevaled and won 15-8, which wrapped up the game with an overall score of 3-2.
“Laguna hat a lot more energy than us in the second and third sets,” sophomore Shannon Knight said. “Although their energy was their strength, we were able to hit them back in the fourth and fifth sets with more energy and eventually use it to win the game.”
The top performer of this game was senior libero, Erica Griffiths. According to sophomore Savannah Standage, Griffiths was able to keep the Breakers on their toes by diving for tough balls and setting up her teammates with her passes. She also did a great job of keeping the team in rhythm by giving advice and pep talks to everyone throughout the game, said Standage.
“I think we played really well as a team last night,” junior Amanda Burns said. “There were a lot of ups and downs in the game, but by the end we played with energy from our coaches and players.”
The Mustangs are currently preparing to move on to their second round of CIF, where they will play Mater Dei High School on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Mater Dei.
“The next round of CIF will be pretty tough because Mater Dei is known to be really good, but I know if we bring our best energy and come together as a team, we definitely have a good chance of beating them,” Knight said.
